My Year of Rest and Relaxation
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh is the story of one Manhattan well-to-do WASP's so-called 'year of rest and relaxation.' Gone into hibernation, our narrator chugs a medley of pills prescribed by the world's worst psychiatrist and sleeps as much as possible in a vacuum of existential ennui. Moshfegh creates a character that's opaque but highly relatable and darkly funny but terribly depressing in a story that's about the value of alienation.
